The Oregon Coast Advanced Technology & Trades Center (OCATT) represents a significant investment in the future of coastal communities, expanding access to hands-on education in construction, maritime technology, industrial trades, and skilled craftsmanship. Located on Oregon Coast Community College's Newport campus, the new facility brings together technical learning and the distinct environmental character of the Oregon Coast.
In collaboration with Hacker and GLAS Architects, Ground Workshop approaches the landscape as an extension of the learning environment. A reimagined campus arrival sequence establishes a welcoming threshold, while stormwater gardens and outdoor educational spaces create opportunities to observe the natural systems that shape the coastal landscape. These interventions connect the practical work happening inside the building with the ecological processes unfolding beyond it.
Set within an ancient coastal dune formation, the landscape responds to the site's unique geology, climate, and surrounding forest. Through thoughtful grading, planting, and material choices, the design seeks to balance durability and environmental performance with moments of discovery and connection to place. Together, architecture and landscape establish a campus environment rooted in the region's working traditions, natural systems, and future opportunities.
