Situated at the edge of the Black Butte Ranch community in Central Oregon, this contemporary residence occupies a remarkable high desert setting, with expansive views toward Black Butte, Mount Washington, and Three Fingered Jack. Designed in collaboration with LEVER Architecture, the home is carefully positioned to engage the surrounding landscape, framing distant volcanic peaks while maintaining an intimate connection to the site's natural character.
Guided by the client's environmental ethos of "leave no trace," the landscape design embraces restraint, allowing the inherent beauty of the site to inform a series of subtle, deliberate interventions. Rather than imposing a conventional residential garden, the design establishes a quiet dialogue between the architecture and the surrounding high desert, where carefully composed outdoor spaces transition into the native landscape.
A restrained palette of natural stone, wood, and regionally appropriate planting reinforces the relationship between built and natural environments. Subtle shifts in materiality, texture, and spatial definition lend structure to the landscape without diminishing its rugged character. The resulting composition balances the precision of contemporary architecture with the informal beauty of the surrounding terrain.
Throughout, the landscape is conceived as an extension of both the home and its setting—an understated framework for experiencing the changing light, seasonal rhythms, and expansive horizons of Central Oregon.
